The Night Wind-Down Journal

A printable evening journal with the same five prompts every night. Five minutes, designed to survive your worst week.

The idea

Blank notebooks fail for this. Faced with an empty page at 10 p.m. you either write nothing or write an essay, and neither helps. What works is the same small set of prompts, every night, until answering them stops requiring a decision.

The journal has five prompts per page and a page per night. It takes about five minutes — deliberately, because a fifteen-minute journal gets abandoned in a bad week and a bad week is exactly when you need it.

What is on a page

Three things that happened today. Three things for tomorrow. What is on my mind — and beside each one, the honest next action, including “nothing until Monday”. One thing I am leaving unfinished, written down so it stops circling. And a single line on how the body feels, which over weeks reveals patterns you would never notice night to night.

Printing it

A5 and A4/Letter versions are included, plus an undated month of pages so you can start on any day without a wasted block of January. Print the month, staple or clip it, keep it out of the bedroom.

What’s inside

  • 31 undated nightly pages

The same five prompts on every page. Undated, so you can start tonight and miss nights without a row of accusing blanks.

  • A worry-dump spread

The two-column format — worry on the left, genuine next action on the right — with space for a full week.

  • A weekly review page

Four questions that surface patterns across the week: what kept recurring, what turned out not to matter, what actually helped.

  • A one-page technique card

The 20-minute rule, the cognitive shuffle and 4–6 breathing on a single sheet you can leave by the bed.

  • A5 and A4/Letter files

Print-ready PDFs for both paper sizes, plus a screen-readable version if you prefer a tablet.

Who it’s for

  • People whose thoughts speed up the moment the room goes quiet

  • Anyone who has bought a blank journal and written in it twice

  • People who would rather not bring a phone to bed

  • Anyone who wants structure without a subscription

How to use it

  1. 1. Do it early, out of the bedroom

  2. 2. Five minutes, timer on

  3. 3. Close it and leave it there

  4. 4. Review once a week
