Why this exists
Lumendal started because the available writing about racing thoughts at night fell into two camps. One was clinical literature: accurate, and impossible to use at 2 a.m. The other was wellness content: readable, and largely invented — lavender oil, gratitude, a cheerful assurance that you simply need to relax.
What was missing was the thing in between. Accurate, sourced, and written for someone who is tired, anxious and reading on a phone in the dark. That is what we are trying to be.
Who writes it
Lumendal is a small independent editorial team, not a clinic and not a medical publisher. Nobody here is a doctor, and we say so on every page rather than implying otherwise through tone.
What we do bring: personal experience of the problem, a genuine commitment to reading primary sources rather than other people’s blog posts, and a willingness to write “the evidence is weak” when the evidence is weak. Our editorial policy sets out exactly how pages are researched, sourced and reviewed.
What we will not do
- We will not claim to treat or cure anything. No page on this site will tell you it fixes anxiety or insomnia. Those are medical claims and we are not in a position to make them.
- We will not overstate evidence. Where research is thin, we say it is thin — even on pages where a stronger claim would sell more.
- We will not use fear. No countdowns, no manufactured urgency, no “what sleep deprivation is doing to your brain” frightening a reader who is already frightened.
- We will not recommend something we would not use. Every review includes what is wrong with the product, and some reviews conclude you should not buy it.
How it is funded
Two ways, both disclosed. Affiliate commissions when you subscribe or buy through some of our links, at no extra cost to you. And our own printable and audio tools, which we make and sell directly.
Affiliate relationships never determine what we include or what we say. The clearest evidence of that is on the pages themselves: our review of weighted blankets says the research is inconclusive, and our Calm review tells a substantial group of readers not to buy it. Neither is what an affiliate-first site would publish.
