Sleepiness and low arousal are not the same thing
You can be profoundly sleep-deprived and still physiologically alert. Sleep pressure builds with hours awake; arousal is a separate state driven by stress signalling, light exposure, activity and stimulants. Sleep needs high pressure and low arousal at the same time. “Tired but wired” is what it feels like when only one of those conditions is met.
This is why willpower does not touch it. You are not failing to relax. You are attempting to sleep in a body that is still chemically prepared for activity.
The evening cortisol problem
Cortisol normally follows a daily curve: high in the morning, tapering through the day, lowest around the start of the night. Prolonged stress can flatten or delay that curve, leaving you with more circulating arousal in the evening than the schedule calls for. The result is the familiar pattern of dragging yourself through the afternoon and coming alive at ten at night.
Light is the strongest lever you have
Light is the dominant signal for circadian timing, and evening light exposure delays the process. The single highest-yield change most people can make is lowering household light for the last hour or two — lamps instead of overheads, warmer colour temperature, screens dimmed and further from the face. It is unglamorous, free, and it moves the needle more than most things you could buy.
Conversely, bright light within an hour of waking helps anchor the other end of the curve. If your evenings are wired, your mornings are part of the fix.
